"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."
2 Timothy 3:16-17
The Bible is the most remarkable and unique book ever written. It is the world’s bestselling book. It is made up of a collection of 66 books that are divided into 2 parts: the Old Testament with 39 books and the New Testament with 27 books.
The word "testament" means agreement or covenant. It refers to God's dealing with the human race. The Old Testament was written before Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem and the New Testament was written after he rose from the grave and returned to heaven.
Some 40 different people wrote the Bible during a period covering over 15 centuries and in three languages - Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek. All of this would be impossible unless the Bible had God as its author. The Holy Spirit inspired the message of the entire Bible.
The Old Testament focuses on the history, laws, and covenant between God and the Israelites. It covers creation (Genesis), the patriarchs (Abraham, Isaac, Jacob), the Exodus from Egypt, the giving of the Law to Moses, and the establishment of Israel. It includes prophecies, poetry (Psalms), wisdom literature (Proverbs), and stories of kings and prophets, emphasizing God's relationship with humanity, sin, and the promise of a Messiah.
The New Testament centers on the life, teachings, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Messiah. The Gospels narrate Jesus’ ministry, miracles, and teachings. The Book of Acts describes the early church's growth. The Letters, written by Paul and others, provide guidance on Christian doctrine, ethics, and salvation. Revelation offers a vision of the end times and God's ultimate victory.
The books of the Bible are divided into chapters. Each chapter is subdivided into verses. This makes it easy to refer to a specific section of the Bible. Sometimes the names of the Bible books are shortened (abbreviated) when a writer refers to a certain verse. Thus Heb. 11:6 refers to the letter of Hebrews in the New Testament, chapter 11, verse 6. Is. 53:5-7 means Isaiah chapter 53 verses 5 to 7. The table or the contents page of your Bible will help you to find the verse.
God has chosen to communicate with us through his Word, the Bible. It is the final authority in all matters of faith and conduct. If you read and study it you can get to know God better, understand more of his plan for your life and discover new truths about Him.
"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path" Psalm 119:105
